National Farmer’s Day is celebrated every year on December 23 in India, especially in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh, where farmers are actively engaged in agriculture.

Popularly known as Kisan Diwas, National Farmer’s Day is celebrated on December 23 every year across India. This special day is observed to pay respect to the farmers and glorify them as the backbone of this country. The day is also celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India, who served the nation from July 28, 1979, to January 14, 1980.

The government of India declared December 23, the day Chaudhary Charan Singh was born, to be celebrated as National Farmers’ Day in 2001. National Farmer’s Day is celebrated every year in states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh, where farmers are actively engaged in agriculture.

In his short tenure as prime minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh developed several welfare schemes for the farmers to improve their conditions and empower them. As a result, the government took the decision in 2001 to recognise Chaudhary Charan Singh’s contribution to the upliftment of farmers and the development of the agriculture sector. Hence, December 23 was declared Kisan Diwas to commemorate Charan Singh’s birth anniversary.

The Kisan leader brought some of the most remarkable reforms in the agrarian sector, and his pro-farmer stance earned him the title ‘Champion of India’s Peasants.’

National Farmer’s Day is dedicated to all the farmers in the country who work around the clock and year round to provide food for the nation and ensure that we never run out of food. This day is usually celebrated in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh, the agriculture and farming states of the nation.

On this day, programmes are held in several parts of the country to familiarize them with innovations in science and technology to maximise their production. They are also given a stage to talk about their needs and goals.
