Elon Musk India Visit: Tesla CEO To Meet PM Narendra Modi, Announces Major EV Investments Projected To Reach USD 3.6 Billion in Revenue in India by 2030

New Delhi, April 11: With Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirming his first-ever India visit to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month and announce key investments in the electric vehicle (EV) space, industry experts on Thursday said that the country could grow into a considerable market for him in the foreseeable future, generating at least $3.6 billion in revenue by 2030.

The news of Musk arriving here brought cheer to millions of Tesla lovers in India, after a determined PM Modi convinced the tech billionaire to look at the country — which has been witnessing stupendous economic growth across quarters for the past decade — as his next destination to build a Tesla plant and a global supply chain system. Elon Musk Confirms India Visit: Tech Billionaire To Meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 22 in New Delhi.

According to experts, there’s a lot of history and talk about Musk’s intentions to enter the Indian market. “The list of possible announcements includes India providing duty cuts on imported Tesla cars, the company establishing an official sales and service presence in the country, followed by possible manufacturing facilities further out,” senior analyst Soumen Mandal from Counterpoint Research told IANS.

The current EV penetration in India is 2.3 per cent, which is likely to reach 28 per cent by 2023. The electric cars priced around $25,000 (Rs 20 lakh and above) will have at least a 15 per cent market share by 2030, according to the latest industry data. “India could grow into a considerable market for Tesla in the long term. As cars effectively become supercomputers on wheels, we anticipate Tesla could achieve $3.6 billion in revenue from car sales in India alone by 2030,” Mandal noted.

Moreover, India has the potential to become a manufacturing hub for producing cars in the sub-$25,000 price range, with opportunities for export to developing and underdeveloped nations. Additionally, said experts, Tesla’s preference for establishing its supercharger network could catalyse the growth of India’s EV charging infrastructure, mirroring the standardization seen with US automakers adopting the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging standards.

Also known as the Tesla charging standard, NACS is an EV charging connector system developed by Tesla. It has been used by all Tesla vehicles in the US since 2021, and was opened for other EV automakers in November 2022. According to Liz Lee, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research, the country’s EV landscape is about to see a significant rise.

“Government initiatives such as the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC) and the recent reduction in import duties on EVs under $35,000 to 15 per cent are game changers,” Lee said. Meanwhile, car sales in India are likely to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.3 per cent between 2024-2030 from 4.4 million units last year.

According to industry experts, when it comes to EVs, the CAGR is expected to touch a staggering 52 per cent in the same time-frame — a “natural progression” for India as noted by Musk. In 2024, India’s EV sales are likely to grow 66 per cent, driven by rising consumer interest, government initiatives, and infrastructure development. Elon Musk Coming in India This Month To Meet PM Narendra Modi and Announce ‘Mega Investment Plans’: Report.

Experts told IANS that Tesla’s presence in India could further stimulate the establishment of supply chain ecosystems, “leading to the localisation of automotive components manufacturing”. It is a clear sign that India’s journey to “become a major player in the global EV market is accelerating,” they emphasised.

India Needs One Million Fast Chargers To Become 100% Electric in Two and Three-Wheeler EV Segment by 2030: Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant

New Delhi, April 7: India must go 100 per cent electric in 2 wheeler and 3 wheeler by 2030 and become a global EV manufacturing champion, the G20 Sherpa and former CEO NITI Aayog, Amitabh Kant, said on Saturday. Kant emphasized the urgency for India to transition its automotive sector towards electric mobility, declaring the era of fossil fuel-based combustion engines as “dead,” “Combustion engine technology based on fossil fuels is “dead” and the future is electric,” he said.

“Transformation of India’s automotive sectors is key; it contributes 7% to its GDP, 35% to manufacturing GDP and 8% to total exports. India has the third-largest global auto market,” Kant said in a post on X. EV Landscape in India To Be Transformed With Key Government Initiatives, Will Lower Manufacturing Costs and Boost EV Sales in Country: Industry Experts.

Amitabh Kant, Former CEO of NITI Aayog:

With the automotive sector contributing significantly to India’s GDP, manufacturing output, and exports, the country recognizes the imperative to adapt to the evolving global landscape. Currently ranking as the third-largest auto market globally, India boasts the title of the largest producer of three-wheelers, the second-largest manufacturer of two-wheelers and buses, and the fourth-largest producer of passenger cars.

Governments Vahan portal dashboard shows an uptrend of EV registrations especially of 2-wheelers, although 3 and 4 wheelers have shown a marginal decline. In January 2024, EVs registration in India was 1,44,877, in Feb it declined a little bit at 1,41,382 but as on 30th March the figure for the month showed an uptrend of 32 per cent at 1,86,143 vehicles.

Kant further stressed on the necessity for India to lead the charge towards electric mobility, proposing an ambitious goal of achieving 100 per cent electrification in two-wheelers and three-wheelers by 2030. “We need at least one million fast chargers in India to adopt EVs by 2030,” Amitabh Kant said.

He also pushed for the domestic manufacturing of these units instead of importing. “We need to push localization content in manufacturing, with megawatt-hour charging for buses and commercial vehicles All EV players & Start-ups instead of creating tech silos must work together to build an interoperable fast-charging network. This is critical for providing impetus to EV movement in India,” the G20 Sherpa said. Ather Rizta Launch Event: ‘Now Indian EV Companies Like Ather Should Make Electric Two-Wheelers for Global Market’, Says Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant During Ather Community Day 2024.

The shift towards electric mobility represents more than just a technological transition; it embodies a paradigm shift in India’s industrial landscape. Embracing disruption, India seeks to not only retain its current market share but also to expand its influence on the global stage.

Kia To Invest USD 28 Billion in Future Mobility Solutions To Strengthen Its Gasoline Hybrid Vehicle Lineup by 2028

Seoul, April 5: Kia, South Korea’s second-largest carmaker, said on Friday it will invest 38 trillion won ($28 billion) in future mobility solutions by 2028, while strengthening its gasoline hybrid vehicle lineup amid slowing sales of electric vehicles (EVs). The planned investment over the next five years is revised up from 33 trillion won announced last year.

Kia will inject 15 trillion won, or nearly 40 percent of the overall spending, in developing EVs, purpose-built vehicles, advanced air mobility, software-driven vehicles and robotics, the company said at this year’s CEO Investor Day, reports Yonhap news agency. Skoda Superb 2024 Re-Launched in India As CBU With Notable Updates; Check Price, Features and Other Details.

Kia expects the EV sales growth will be slowing further this year due to an economic slowdown, reduced government subsidies, lack of charging infrastructure, and potential risks of fire. “Faced with tougher competition with rivals and growing geopolitical uncertainties, the company will flexibly respond to rapidly changing market trends and change risks into opportunities,” Kia President and Chief Executive Song Ho-sung said.

To weather the slowing demand for EVs, the maker of K5 sedans and Sorento SUVs said it will add more gasoline hybrid models to its lineup in coming years. Kia projected the ratio of gasoline hybrid models in its total vehicle sales will rise to 19 per cent, or 800,000 units, in 2028 from 12 percent, or 372,000, this year.

On top of that, it will also continue to beef up its EV lineup with mass-market models despite lower demand for zero-emission cars, the company said in a statement. In the short term, the company plans to gradually launch three new all-electric SUVs — EV3, EV4, and EV5 — in the domestic market starting this year. The EV5 sub-midsized SUV was initially launched in China last year. Gudi Padwa 2024 Cars to Buy: From Hyundai Creta N Line to Tata Punch EV and Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor, List of Latest Cars, SUVs and EVs To Buy on Hindu New Year’s Day.

Kia aims to sell 3.2 million vehicles, including 307,000 EVs, this year, higher than the 3.08 million units sold last year. For 2023, its net profit jumped 62 per cent to 8.78 trillion won from a year earlier on improved product mix, rising average selling prices, and the won’s weakness against the dollar.
